The Ghosts Of Erin made their first debut at the 2006 Myth & Mayhem Gaelic Festival held in Regency Park Amphitheater in Raleigh, NC. They shared the stage with such Celtic notables as Albanach, Martin Furey, The Banshee Dancers and Seven Nations. In a short period of time, the band distilled from a 7 member traditional ceili format to a 4 piece dynamic - embracing the Uilleann pipes, Flute, Fiddle, Bodhran, Guitars, Vocals and Dancing - and expanding on regional Irish stylings to include Celtic song as well.
We were hard-studying devotees of The Traditions for many years, before a foot was put on the stage to perform. The band was just a natural progression after so many years of study and soul-searching.
We studied the music of Irish Travelers, the drive of Donegal reels and the lyrical ornamentations of Clare County, the subtlety of Sean nOs singing - the legacy of the old Masters. No songbook can be bought that will do the same.
The Ghosts of Erin include Dr. Eric Hahn on Uilleann Pipes and Flute, Chad Roberts on Guitar and Percussion, Heather Roberts on Vocals and Dance and Jerry Jacuzio on Fiddle and Guitar.
We all play other instruments for specials occasions. Hear us at Christmas or doing some Old English piece and you might get to hear some Lute. You might hear a bit of the Norse influence done on a Nychelharpa; an instrument that was all the rage in the 14th century and centuries after. Eric Hahn is an accomplished Scottish Great Piper as well. Chad studied Classical Guitar and the works of English composers of the gauge of John Dowland. Heather spent years of study in Scottish and Irish dancing and has been a vocalist long before she became our 'Mrs. Roberts'.
If the band had a mission statement, it would be to play the traditions with such power and feeling to be able to reach people just as it did 100 years ago and earlier. And share the treasure of The Traditions and the beauty of our talented local friends with others.
